Lucy Hale Says Songwriting is More Personal and Intimate Than Acting

Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars may have surprised her TV fans with her pursuit of songwriting and singing recently.  The actress revealed that she grew up doing both performing and singing.  So far, her acting career has taken off well and it appears that her music career will catch up quickly.

Hale will be going country with her debut album.  Already she has met up with Sugarland‘s Kristian Bush at his studio for some songwriting sessions.  When asked about their recent collaboration, Bush and Hale had nothing but good things to say about each other.

Bush told CMT, “She sounds like Carrie [Underwood] — strong with a blues side and a pop side to it. And a lot like Faith [Hill]. As she gets more comfortable, her voice will get even stronger, and you’ll hear more powerhouse stuff, but stylistically she lives in that range.” Of her songwriting, Bush said, “She has a really good grasp of her own story she wants to tell of growing up in Memphis. Lucy is a natural.”

“Kristian told me that hard work pays off. He said, ‘Worry about the career side of it later. Just start with a song,’ He’s so nice, so funny. We talked about how, in acting, I don’t have to be Lucy, and I don’t let a lot of people know who I am. But with songwriting, you need to let down walls and be completely vulnerable and wear your heart on your sleeve,” Hale shared.

Lucy Hale Teases 'Pretty Little Liars' Drama: Ezra Has A Secret!

We’ve gotta hand it to those drama-prone “Pretty Little Liars;” there is just never a dull moment with that crew, and we love them for it.

The only trouble in running into said liars (i.e. the very likable actresses on the show) is that we can never get them to spill the beans about major plot points. However when MTV News recently caught up with actress/country singer Lucy Hale, we got her to reveal a couple interesting details about her onscreen boyfriend, Ezra, and the possible danger tied to a secret he’s keeping.

“Oh, you guys are in for it. We’re shooting [an episode where] I get to meet his family,” Lucy said. “What’s interesting about this season with Ezra, for the most part, he’s been always happy, a pretty perfect boyfriend, but this time he has a little bit of a secret so it changes the dynamics a little. I can’t tell you what the secret is, but his storyline gets much deeper, much darker and by the mid-season finale something [happens] that could potentially change their relationship for the worse or better.”

Intriguing teasery indeed! What kind of secret could seemingly squeaky-clean Ezra be keeping from Aria? We’ll have fun thinking about that one for a while. In the meantime, we also asked Lucy for her thoughts on the relationship between Ezra and Aria’s mom, who seem to be nursing an uneasy alliance. Is there any possibility that those two could get too close?

“Ooooh. It’s so funny because we always do table reads, and they always read [their scenes] really flirtatiously and I’m like, ‘Hold on a second you guys, let’s step back.’” Lucy said with a laugh. “I think it would be interesting, but I don’t think they’d do it because it’s ABC Family and what’s so great about Aria is that she’s so close to her mom—her mom is like her rock. I think, actually the fans, they might 50 percent be gung-ho and 50 percent angry [about it], but if it were me, heck yeah. Why not? Go for it.”

Lucy Hale on working with Sugarland’s Kristian Bush

http://www.mtv.com/videos/news/810357/lucy-hale-working-with-sugarlands-kristian-bush-on-new-album.jhtml

As we reported last week, “Pretty Little Liars” star Lucy Hale is going straight country on her first music album. Even more exciting, Hale is working with a hugely popular and Grammy Award-winning country act on her musical debut.

“We have a week off from ['Pretty Little Liars'] and I’m flying to Atlanta to write with Kristian Bush from Sugarland,” Hale revealed to MTV News when we caught up with her recently. “They’re the biggest country band out there and I don’t even know how I got that. I don’t even know! I got an email about it and it was obviously a no-brainer.”

The obviously excited Hale went on to say that she hopes to be teaming up with a few of the brilliant producers behind Adele’s hit record, as well as several music veterans who are stepping into the country music scene for the first time.

“I think I’m working with some people who have worked with Adele, which is really cool, although she’s not country. It’s sort of a lot of writers and producers who don’t do a lot of country, so it’s going to be a good mixture,” she explained. “It’s going to be interesting, in a good way!”

Speaking of a good mixture, we asked Hale if she’ll be calling upon any of her “PLL” co-stars for their musical contributions, since we already know Tyler Blackburn can sing.

“I’m so down. I was actually hanging out with [Blackburn] last night and he plays guitar,” she said. “I’ve never really heard him sing, but he’s got a really good voice and Keegan [Allen]‘s a good performer, but on this album probably not, but maybe in the future!”
